Paradox Tolerance

Can you hold two truths without forcing one to win?

What This Measures

Paradox tolerance measures your ability to hold contradictory truths simultaneously without forcing a false resolution. Can you sit with the tension of two things being true at once? Or do you collapse complexity into a comfortable either/or?

Why It Matters

The most important problems in life and business don't have clean answers. Innovation vs. safety. Individual freedom vs. collective welfare. Short-term survival vs. long-term sustainability. Leaders who force these into false binaries make worse decisions than those who can hold the tension and design for both.

Real-World Stakes

AI Governance Paradox

AI must be both innovative and safe, both transparent and competitive, both fast and careful. Boards that force a binary choice — 'are we pro-innovation or pro-safety?' — miss that the answer is genuinely both, simultaneously, in creative tension.

Restorative Justice

The criminal justice system embodies a deep paradox: accountability and compassion, punishment and rehabilitation, justice for victims and humanity for offenders. Systems that resolve this tension by picking one side consistently fail. The most effective approaches hold both.

How It's Tested

Open-response scenarios present genuine paradoxes with no clean resolution. AI scoring classifies your response: do you force a false binary (lowest), acknowledge the tension (moderate), genuinely hold both sides (high), or synthesise a novel resolution that transcends the binary (highest)?

Practice This Week

The Steel Man

Find a topic where you hold a strong opinion. Spend 5 minutes genuinely arguing the strongest possible version of the other side — not a straw man, but the best argument your opponent could make. If you can't do this, your position isn't as well-reasoned as you think. If you can, you'll hold your own position with more nuance.
