Do you actually know yourself, or just think you do?
Self-awareness measures the accuracy of your self-perception — how well you actually know yourself versus how well you think you know yourself. It's measured by asking you to predict your own scores before seeing them. The gap between prediction and reality is your self-awareness score.
Self-awareness is the #1 predictor of effective leadership across every study that's measured it. People who know their own patterns — their strengths, blind spots, and triggers — make better decisions, build stronger relationships, and recover faster from mistakes. People who think they know themselves but don't are the most dangerous leaders of all.
Research consistently shows that the least competent people in any domain are also the worst at recognising their own incompetence. In boardrooms, this means the directors most confident in their AI governance capability may be the least equipped. Self-awareness is the antidote.
Studies show that people readily identify biases in others but consistently fail to see the same biases in themselves. The 'blind spot bias' — the belief that you're less biased than average — is itself the most pervasive bias of all.
Before seeing your results, you predict your score on each dimension. Your self-awareness score is the inverse of the average gap between your predictions and your actual scores. People who know themselves well predict accurately. People who don't tend to overestimate in dimensions they value and underestimate in dimensions they dismiss.
Ask someone you trust — genuinely trust — this question: 'What's the biggest thing I don't see about myself?' Listen without defending. The discomfort you feel is proportional to the insight you're gaining.
